Trouble making a decision?
Ask yourself one simple question
My husband and I were living in a desirable neighborhood in Northern Virginia a few years back. The commute to work was easy for both of us. Our townhome condo was only a few years old. A park with a bike/walking path was just across the street. Each month brought new amenities within an easy walk or drive.
Yet, we weren’t happy there. We clearly wanted to move AWAY from the huge drawbacks of the neighborhood — like the city treating it like a golden goose and the seemingly annual pronouncements from our electric company wanting to install a a high voltage transmission line under our street.
We wanted to move TOWARD something rather than away from something.
So we made our list of what we wanted our home to have and to be.
We wanted a single-family house. One nestled in the trees in a park-like setting. An established neighborhood with a sense of place where we might get to know our neighbors.
Any number of neighborhoods in Northern Virginia could have fit the bill. But we didn’t want to land just anywhere or in another center-hall colonial.
We wanted significant architecture — mid-century modern to be specific. We wanted a beautiful house inside and out and a beautiful yard. Single story. No stairs to the house. A level driveway. Lots of light.
We found exactly what we wanted almost 18 months after we started searching and we stayed true to our desire of MOVING TOWARD what we wanted rather than MOVING AWAY from what we didn’t.
THE TAKEAWAY:
When you find yourself unhappy with something in your life and ready for a change, ask yourself, “Am I moving towards something I want or am I moving away from something I don’t want.”
Don’t focus on MOVING AWAY from what you don’t want. Instead, figure out what you DO want and focus on the pleasure, the happiness, the excitement and allow it to draw you TOWARDS it!
